About CourtLens

What is CourtLens and why?

CourtLens is a non-profit project that cleans and visualizes Supreme Court yearbook statistics to make judicial data accessible.

Although public, the data is locked in dozens of spreadsheets. CourtLens makes it readable for everyone.

Where does the data come from?

All figures come from the Supreme Court Judicial Yearbook and public open data.

How is the data processed?

Raw spreadsheets are parsed with Python and built into static JSON; the site is fully static.

  1. Extract 10-year series from the yearbook trend spreadsheets.
  2. Clean multi-row headers, merged and duplicate rows; annotate units.
  3. Save to JSON and expose the source table beneath every chart.

What are the limitations?

CourtLens never estimates figures absent from the source; some crimes are aggregated under broader categories.

Units and bases differ per table; this is not legal advice.

How often is it updated?

The yearbook is published annually; CourtLens currently covers 2015–2024.
